Search Engine Submission

Search Engine Submission is not the best way to launch your site. It is far better for Google and the other major search engines to find your site organically, and preferably from a high page rank site. This is why many people will buy backlinks from sites with a high pagerank, although if you get caught your site may be penalized!

Still, many people like to submit their site to multiple search engines, so if you are going to do this, you should use a script to automate the process if possible, as the benefits are debatable.

Some caveats:

Use a “spam-catcher” email address, as many of these submission services will spam you to death after submitting your URL & email.
Many of these scripts are becoming obsolete as more and more sites add “captchas” and other tools to block automated submissions.
Some of these “search engines” are nothing more than methods of capturing your email and later sending you all kinds of commercial offers (spam).

The debate on the usefulness of meta tags rages on… there is much confusion here, so we will try to clear it up.

Google Ignores Meta Keyword Tags
A lot of people don’t know this, and believe that meta keyword tags are how search engines catalog your page. Nothing could be further from the truth. The major innovation of Google was that it ignored meta tags! It actually parsed the content of a page and then saw how many other pages linked to it…

Meta Tags Are Still Useful
You should still use meta tags, especially the Meta Description tag, but you should also use the meta keywords tag, as there are some older search engines that still refer to them. Not only that, but meta tags may come back as search engine algorithm technology evolves to penalize sites which “stuff” keywords and spam meta tags.

Creating a simple, short and informative video for your site is a great way to generate additional pagerank as well as traffic. If you make a video for a highly searched term and get traffic to your video, the pagerank will pass through to your site if you have hyperlinked it.

Youtube is owned by Google, and therefore any videos there show up high in Google’s search results. If you have a video posted there with a backlink to your site, this is very helpful traffic-wise as well as backlink-wise.

There are a number of tools you can use to create a video that can be as simple as a demo of your site taken with a screen capture application such as Cam Studio, a free application that allows you to produce simple video of your computer screen. This can be used to create a simple walk-through tutorial for your site.

Creating small articles and including links to your site is an excellent way to generate quality backlinks. You may excerpt some of your articles and then place those excerpts on some of the sites listed below.

This is an activity better suited to later stages of your site launch, as unscrupulous users may steal your content and place it on their site. If their site is indexed by Google and other search engines before your site is, you may look like the copyright violator!

The first real links you should put out for your site are Site Reviews. These are easy to do – you simply post a link to your site and ask people to review it for you. Most of these sites are frequented by other webmasters and designers and they will often give you some useful tips, but the real purpose of this is to get your first backlinks.

Two of our favorite sites to post reviews on are:

Web Developer (PageRank 7)
Digital Point Forums (PageRank 4)

These two sites will get your site backlinked very quickly. Do not spam these sites, and only post your link once. Should you post frequently there and become a valued member of their community, you will be allowed to put links in your signature. Digital Point Forums requires you to make 10 posts before you may post a hyperlink.

There are other sites which will give you free site reviews and a corresponding backlink. Check back as we expand our current listing.

Do Follow Blogs & Directories

Many blogs and sites have had a strict “no-follow” policy for all outbound links thanks to the Google pagerank algorithm which penalizes sites for outbound links. Many webmasters will try to maximize inbound links to their site while cutting off all outbound links without the “nofollow” tag.

Some sites, such as Wikipedia, allow linking, but all links are ‘nofollow’. The same goes for most popular forums and blogs.

Comment Posting Tips
When you post on a “dofollow” blog, be sure to post a relevant comment and not some spammy comment like, “Great blog! I’ve added it to my favorites.” The right way to get a nice backlink is by filling in the form as shown:
